Do we still need plastic drinking straws?

There’s a new movement going on in bars, restaurants, and eateries all over the world, and that’s getting rid of plastic drinking straws.

Although they can make drinking a bit easier, and there are some people who need staws in order to eat, plastic straws are an environmental hazard; even properly disposed, they end up in oceans and waterways, and take centuries to break down. Animals are at risk of being pierced by plastic straws, as well.

Restaurants are finding that requests for straws are relatively light these days, so they prefer getting rid of them or offering paper straws instead of keeping them. Personally, I never find much of a need for a straw, so I wouldn’t mind if the plastic variety goes away, if it means less stress on the environment.
